All right, today is gonna be the maiden voyage of my new kayak.
Just bought this sucker yesterday. I been thinking about buying a new kayak recently and Duke’s sporting goods had this particular model on sale, 33% off. It’s the Pelican Trailblazer 100, 10 foot kayak, sit inside type with pretty nice features. It’s got the bungee up there on the deck so you can store some stuff. It’s got kind of a dashboard feature here. It’s got this bungee-covered compartment back here.
It’s not waterproof, but it’s a storage compartment. You could also attach things to the bungee up here on top if you wanted to. And a pretty nice comfortable seat, the Ergobase seat and the adjustable footrest down there for your height. There’s a lot of storage room up inside the hull of the boat.
So, let me see what else. Got the nifty carrying handles. The thing only weighs abour 38 pounds so I don’t know if I’ll need those handles very often, but be nice to have, maybe portaging dry section of rivers or whatever.
So anyway, I can see already a couple of upgrades that I’m gonna make to it. Maybe a couple of rod holders and maybe a cup holder, things such as that but we’ll see. I’m gonna take it out today and just see how I like it and go from there. So, about to unload it.
Well, after about two and a half hours on the lake, I’m back. As you can see, the boat is dirty. She’s been christened properly. It’s a nice little boat. I’m really happy with it and like I said earlier, I’m gonna make a couple of slight modifications, just add-ons to make it easier to do certain things, but really the boat is good as is. It’s a real nice little kayak. So, very happy with my purchase.
Unboxing Pelican Trailblazer Kayak
Hello everybody. Welcome back. Jiujitsu 2000 here today. I’m coming at you with a quick, interesting video. Today you can obviously see that I have a kayak sitting behind me. This is the Pelican Trailblazer 100. I just purchased two of these and I’m gonna show you what it looks like.
When you first buy them they come in plastic like this so I’m going to do a quick unboxing, it’s not going to be too significant. But I just want to show you what it looks like under the plastic. So we’ll take a look.
For those of you out there that might be wondering where I got this kayak from, I got it from Dick’s Sporting Goods.
This is a 10 foot sit in kayak. The weight capacity that this model will hold is approximately 275 pounds.
Normally these models retail around $229 on the website but I waited and I found them on sale for $179. So I went to my store and picked two of them up. The guy that worked there, he told me that sometimes they sell as high as $399. I don’t know how true that is or not but these are really nice, durable kayaks.
Some of the features on this kayak is you have a little area right here on the front where you could put your keys or your cell phone or something like that. You have a little bit of bungee cordage up here so if you wanted to put a backpack or something and strap it down, you got these little hooks right here. On the front you can see there’s a nice little carry handle where you can drag this thing around. And the plastic is pretty durable.
You’ll notice that on the back here, there’s a really nice padded seat with a water bottle holder and you can adjust these straps to adjust the back of the seat or you can just make it to where you’re sitting against the plastic itself. I really like that. Because your back, you have that solid platform behind you. Some kayaks you don’t have that plastic behind you so you’re limited by only your seat. I kind of like this option right here.
Down inside, if you can see, there’s some adjustable foot pegs. Just adjust them for different size riders, whatever length of feet you have, you can adjust these very simply and they’ll stay put right where you adjust them to.
Now on the back here, there’s a nice storage place where you can put things. So you open this little hatch and look inside. Pretty cool. Nice little owner’s manual, information packet there. But I thought this was kind of cool because if you’re doing any kind of fishing, they’d have to be some small fish, crawdads or something like that, you could pour some water in there, put your fish or your catch or whatever little bitty items that you have. You can also use this if you had a few folks or something, put a couple canned goods in there, aluminum can drinks and then a little ice or something, like an ice chest. So it’s kind of a cool little feature that this model has.
Again, there’s another carry handle on the back. Here’s the drain plug right here. Pull this little rubber plug out and drain the boat.
Now one thing I want to talk about, I want to flip this over real quick and I’m gonna show you the bottom of it. If you look at it, let me turn it this way for you, if you look at the hull and you look more specifically at this ridge right here, how it gets real big right here, and it also does the same thing in the front. What’s neat about that hole design is if you get water inside the kayak, the water will fall into this area. So the result of that would be you would have a nice, cry area to sit in.
So it’s a pretty cool little kayak. It’s got a big cockpit. So if I wanted my dog, come on buddy, if I wanted my dogs in here with me, they could jump in here with me. So that’s something that I really like about this model. I’m going to go grab this other one and show you another color. This is the same exact model in a blue color. They also offer it in a green. They have a red, they have a, what do they call that? Coral, purple and then these two colors, if I remember them all correctly.
But these are nice little kayaks. Again, they’re 10 footers and it’s the Pelican Blazer 100. So I want to say thank you for watching the video today. I know this was pretty simple. Here’s a little bit of specs on this kayak. It’s a 10 foot. The beam, which is the width of the kayak is 28 inches, 14 inches deep, cockpit width 25 inches, cockpit length 54.8. weight, the weight of the boat, 38 pounds. Max capacity again, I was right, 275 pounds. And that’s a little bit of the specs on this model.
Okay, folks, right now you can see my daughter and she’s standing next to a paddle. These paddles were on sale at the store. I think we paid $29 for them and you can see right now that they come in different lengths. Like this one that I’m holding is 230 centimeters and this other one is 180 centimeters. Now what they told me at the store, when it comes to measuring your paddles is you’ll set the paddle on the ground and you’ll reach up real high with your arm. See how her fingers are just barely hanging out above the paddle? Her height is just a little bit tall for that paddle. So that paddle’s just a tiny bit short. However, we chose that one because the next size up would have been way too long, the paddle would have been way too long. So that paddle, I believe is going to work really well for her.
So I’m going to switch cameras, give her the camera for a minute and I’ll show you my paddle. If I stand like this I reach up, see how my fingers are barely over the top? That’s what they say is the ideal size paddle for you. So I hope this little bit helps.
These are nice paddles, they have these little drip guards on them so that if you get any kind of water on there, the water will come up and kind of drip off so your hands don’t get all wet. And these are kind of a rubbery feel to them. So I’m kind of excited to see how these paddles work. We’re going to take these boats out and we’re going to give it a shot, see how they do for us.
There’s my daughter with the little dog. She’s in the water and I’m here with my dog here sitting in the cockpit with me. We’re gonna go for a little cruise. The water feels great and the kayaks feel very stable. What do you think of that one? Does it feel good?

Cool. We’ll see you guys in a few. The foot pegs are very comfortable. Balance on this kayak is really nice. It seems to go fairly straight and the paddling effort is not much at all. It’s pretty easy to get some movement. The dog likes it and he fits in this cockpit really well.
