Buying a kayak online can be tricky. There’s scores of brands and models to choose from, each with different features, lengths and body shapes. To make matters more complicated, there’s no way to take any prospective kayak out for a test drive when you’re buying off the internet.
Every kayaker wants an affordable, high quality kayak that they can rely on for years to come. Nothing could be worse than spending several hundred dollars on a model that you just don’t like.
But with so many options to choose from, it’s difficult to know just where to begin. User reviews and critical evaluations are often polarized and conflicting, and shoppers never really know who they can rely on for good advice.
We’re hoping to make the process just a little bit simpler. We created this site to pit some of the top selling kayaks against each other, comparing their features, quality, price and performance in order to pick our favorites. We wanted to help every shopper find their perfect kayak—whether you’re an experienced paddler or just earning your sea legs.
How We Pick Our Winners
Our independent reviews are assembled by meticulously collecting expert opinions, user reviews and product specifications from across the internet. We’re not just looking for the top rated brands or best-selling models. Instead, we’re taking a hard look at how each model serves its owners in the real world, out on the water.
We like to weigh the pros and cons of each kayak we review, to ensure that every shopper can find a kayak that suits their budget and lifestyle. Instead of ranking our kayaks based on arbitrary criteria, our rankings are category based, organized by price and/or classifications.
Each set of reviews has been organized into individual articles, comparing the strengths and weaknesses of top sellers in that category (i.e the best fishing kayaks, the best kayaks for beginners). The articles offer insight and guidance on what to look for in each class of kayak.
Which Kayak is Right for Me?
Not sure what kind of kayak you’re looking for? Check out our main page for an in-depth guide on picking the best kayak for your needs.
Generally, kayaks are first organized by their body shape and design, based on which activities and/or which bodies of water they are best suited for.
For example, “fishing kayaks” are a special class of kayak that usually include features geared toward fishing out of a kayak. This might include rod holders, a wide body shape for stability, and extra cargo space. Recreational kayaks, in contrast, are designed for more leisurely excursions on the water. They may feature less cargo space and a stripped down design, and are usually sold at a lower price.
If you have the opportunity, the ideal way to find your perfect kayak is to try a few models out for yourself at a kayak rental place. This helps you get a feel for the differences between body types, designs and brands.
