Born as John Veniaminov in Irkutsk, 1797, St Innocent of Alaska always had a dream of becoming a priest when he was still a child. He also developed penchant for kayaking. For many years, Saint Innocent would travel from his country, Siberia to the present day Alaska by kayak. This made him more popular. Many people respected him because of his exceptional skills in paddling kayak. He often travelled to different destinations to administer the word of God to people by use of kayak. It is for this reason that the Russian Orthodox Church decided to honor him by canonizing him on 6th October in 1977. Many lobby groups have been pushing churches to give him the title of Patron Saint of Kayaking.
